Flashback is a cylindrical screen-tower equipped with arrays of cameras that continuously record the surrounding environment of the Seoul City Hall plaza in real time. The footage is stored for twelve hours before being displayed, creating a delayed reflection of the plaza. Rather than providing a precise record, the display is intentionally blurred and degraded, maintaining physical proximity while emphasizing temporal distance. Viewers’ reactions to the playback are also recorded, generating a continuous cycle of observation. By reintroducing past events into the present, Flashback encourages repeated engagement with the space and a heightened awareness of time within it.

돌려보기는 여러 개의 카메라가 서울 시청 광장의 모습을 실시간으로 끊임없이 기록하여 재생하는 원통형의 스크린 타워입니다. 촬영된 영상은 12시간 후 재생되며, 스크린을 통해 재생되는 과거와 현재의 광경이 지속적으로 교차하며 대비됩니다. 선명한 기록이 아닌 의도적으로 흐려지고 해상도가 낮아진 영상이 재생됨으로써, 스크린을 통해 과거를 보고 만질 수 있으면서도 여전히 현재와 과거 사이의 물리적 시간적 거리감이 유지됩니다.
재생된 영상을 바라보는 관객들의 반응 또한 연속적으로 기록되며, 관객이 영상을 바라보는 행위와 그에 대한 반응이 다시 시간차를 두고 재생되며 기록과 관찰이 반복되는 순환 구조가 형성됩니다. 돌려보기 안에서 광장의 과거는 현재가 되고, 현재는 다시 미래가 됩니다. 이를 통해 사람들은 반복적인 경험 속에서도 새로움을 발견하고, 시간의 흐름을 새롭게 인식하게 됩니다.
